Excerpt from Yamei Peng: Ceramics & Sculpture
Yamei Peng, a legendary artist from Hualien, grew up with a “dream-building child” living within her—curious, imaginative, and eager to tell stories through clay, expressing vitality at every turn. Her creative journey has been one of breaking down and rebuilding, never yielding, with decades of dedication to ceramics and international recognition of her work.
Ceramic sculpture opened for her a fearless journey of spiritual exploration.
From childhood in Hualien to a mature transformation rooted in her hometown, she embraced a profound understanding of life. Through her perspective, all living beings exist in diverse and vibrant forms, yet each reveals the truth of existence at a deeper level.
As a fearless creator, Peng boldly presents both her ignorance and her uncertainties, relentlessly pursuing new realms of artistic exploration. She understands deeply that no outward form can convey the inner landscapes she seeks to depict—except through herself.
From realism to abstraction, Peng’s sculptural works transcend her earlier knowledge and techniques in ceramics. She has broken free from the conventional boundaries that confined ceramics to the realm of “crafts,” resolutely redefining both the form and substance of her work. She has established for herself a distinct artistic identity in the realm of fine art, courageously representing pure existence. Through the Fern series, her chosen subject, she invites viewers to encounter both the visible present and the contemplative inner self.
The fern, among the most emblematic species of the natural world, has endured the tests of time for over 300 million years. Whether flourishing or withering, thriving along ever-changing riverbanks, it survives with resilience, embodying unyielding vitality.
In Peng’s Fern Series, the works convey a sense of poetry and meditation. Each piece, like real ferns, breathes with emotion and even suggests rhythms of flight, as though swaying in the wind along cliffside springs. Ultimately, her works guide the viewer toward serenity, allowing the heart to experience peace and stillness. The message behind the Fern Series is clear: no matter how difficult or perilous life may be, one can, like the fern, blossom with beauty and stand fearless.
Finally, her works embody the aesthetic concept of part-to-whole / composite effects. Every sculpture is built from thousands of individually carved fern leaves, layered and repeated to realize the unity of “One.” These assembled works, reconstructed into monumental compositions, present powerful themes to the audience. This approach represents the essence of contemporary ceramic sculpture—holistic in vision, conceptual in depth, and uniquely expressed in Yamei Peng’s Fern Series.
