In this exhibit, Yamei for the first time using large sculpture creative style that overcome ceramic sculptural limitations. The works escape from object thinking to spatial dialogue. The exhibited works include fern series that obtained international recognition since 2010 as well as brand new creation since pandemic. In addition, her bold experiment by using metal, especially combining clay, stainless steel and copper, overcome metallic material limitations, manifesting her outstanding skill and her life-long pursue for artistic excellence. Yamei makes great breakthrough that shocked both ceramic and sculpture worlds in Taiwan.
For the past four decades, Yameis works can be divided into people, latern, fern leaves, time and space flowers and large public art stages. Although style can be different, but the core idea of her works remains unchanged, that is life caring, beauty and warmth.
Since 2010, Yamei was obsessed by ferns which become her main creation element and even extend to time and space and public art stages. All works continue the philosophy of life gained from ferns. Yamei believes the existence of ferns in the nature seems to be humble. However, they exhibit the exuberant vitality. With the belief in mind, Yamei encourages audience to live fearlessly and bloom beautifully like ferns, no matter how hard and severe our life is. Everything is hopeful.
Her works feature countless fern leaves. All of them were hand-made piece by piece. Dedicating with determination, perseverance, and concentration produced the dialogue of body, mind, and Yamei’s classic creations. Yamei stated, “Every single piece of fern leaf was hand-made and pasted one by one. One single piece is negligible. However, it becomes a faith as tens of thousands were made. My finger joints are constantly painful. But I am fortunate that I can choose a different life path and proceed fearlessly. I believe, one does an ordinary thing for decades, it becomes extraordinary.”
Yamei utilizes simple and rhythmic modeling to lead the dialogue between nature and inner mind that emphasizes fragility and resilience, despair and hope of our life. By using small and diverse plant shapes, Yamei infuse and evocate respect and admire to our life. Combining body repetitive action and inner mind, the best sculptural art works were finally born. Yamei observes intensively human desire and life cycle of ferns. She leads the audience to search their humble awakening in the deep mind, and to secure never give up spirit, because people always trapped by swirl.
At the beginning of year 2025, the features of the exhibit (as if everything hopeful) include five parts which are.
(1) Renewal & Transparency: From the change of work size and metallic material, you can see Yamei’s perseverance in search for the power of life and peace. She also declares the possibility of variability and mutation in ferns series creation. Ceramic sculptural works travel through lights to expect infinite extension. This all shows the unchangeable law of all things in nature. Early spring is not only the time for seeds sprout, but also time ready for flower blooming. Mother-nature is still sustainable for people to rely on.
(2) The aesthetic concept of art-whole and composite effects: All works displaced are handmade piece by piece using ferns and natural elements which were then stacked to form one whole piece of work. This is the feature of modern ceramic sculpture art works totally conceptual.
(3) (Transformation): The Transformation theme of latest works. Based on the power of fern life series works, the transformation theme of latest works since 2020, such as “journey of seeds”, “dreamy”, “trees of life”, and “prosperity” all reveal the process of change, rebirth, and the power of life.
(4) Flying Rhythm: The flying rhythm concept was inspired by “Victoire de Samothrace” displayed at Versailles. The concept also comes from four elements of earth, water, wind, and fire, turned hard rock material into softness and flying rhythm.
(5) Lastly, the Humanism idea spread all over the exhibit hall. All works depict kindness, warmth and love, meaning as winter comes, spring is close to you. Lives are full of bright and hope. Please observe carefully Yamei’s works such as “search for perfection”, “flowerd of time and space”, “zero limits,” “turbulence,”and “moment and eternity.”
Consequently, as we went through the turbulent years of Covid-19 pandemic, disturbed geopolitics, as well as economic storms, the 2025 exhibition “as if everything hopeful” intends to bring us hope and peacefulness.
